TMC Warns Humayun Kabir Over Mosque Event on Unity Day.

In Kolkata, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) commemorates December 6 as 'Unity Day' each year to mark the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. Taking to X, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "The soil of Bengal is the soil of unity. This is the land of Rabindranath (Tagore), the land of Nazrul (Islam), the land of Ramakrishna–Vivekananda — this land has never bowed its head before any divisive move, nor will it ever do so in the days to come."
However, this message of unity contrasts sharply with developments in Beldanga, Murshidabad, where the local MLA, Humayun Kabir, is spearheading the foundation stone laying programme for the Babri Masjid, challenging the state party’s narrative.
In response, TMC state general secretary and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh issued a strong statement early Saturday, clearly targeting Humayun Kabir without mentioning him by name. Ghosh reaffirmed that the party has no objection to building any place of worship like temples, mosques, or churches on individual or collective religious grounds. The party neither practices expulsion nor punitive actions against members for such initiatives.
Kunal Ghosh clearly clarified why disciplinary action was taken against Humayun. He accused Kabir of falling into the opposition’s trap by exploiting religious sentiment for political gain, turning what should be a religious act into a politicised event. Ghosh said any attempt within the party to use religion as a tool to spread polarisation or disrupt communal peace for vote politics violates organisational discipline and merits action.

Referencing the Bhagavad Gita, Kunal Ghosh emphasised respect for religious texts but condemned their misuse for political marketing. He insisted the same principle applies to the Beldanga incident, building a mosque is legitimate religious practice, but deliberately linking it to December 6 politics is not.
Humayun Kabir and his supporters claim he was expelled for initiating the mosque construction, a charge Ghosh denounced as a “blatant lie.” The party views Kabir as a pawn in opposition politics who breached party discipline, compelling the TMC to take firm action.
