Lionel Messi's eagerly awaited visit to Kolkata spiralled into pandemonium at Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) on Saturday, exposing glaring lapses in crowd management and organisation. The Argentine superstar, fresh off arriving with Inter Miami teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul for a three-day India tour, stepped out of his car at 11:30 AM amid a sea of 70,000 fans. What was meant to be a ceremonial lap, exhibition match, and celebrity appearances by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan devolved into vandalism, breaches, and global embarrassment.
Fans, many who shelled out 3,800 to 16,000 rupees for tickets, often at inflated black-market rates, grew furious as they couldn't glimpse Messi. Surrounded by around 100 overzealous individuals blocking views, he appeared only fleetingly on giant screens. Chants of "We want Messi" echoed from the stands, escalating to bottle-throwing and chair-smashing when organiser Shatadru Dutta's pleas via microphone fell flat. Selfie-seekers swarmed the pitch, frustrating distant spectators further.
Visibly irritated, Messi abruptly exited the field, triggering outright mayhem. Thousands surged past barricades, storming the pitch and tearing down banners. Broken chairs and debris rained down, while some looted flower pots and even ripped up grass, evoking images of post-regime chaos at Bangladesh's Ganabhaban after Sheikh Hasina's flight. Mamata Banerjee turned her car around en route, later issuing a public apology, and Shah Rukh Khan stayed back at his hotel. Police lost control as the crowd overran arrangements, with reports of fire-starting attempts.
This fiasco drew parallels to Bengaluru's 2024 IPL victory stampede, where 11 died in overcrowding during Virat Kohli's felicitation, though no fatalities occurred here, the looting and destruction mirrored that disorder. Enraged fans accused Shatadru Dutta who was arrested later in the day, of a "major scam," likening him to Saradha chit-fund kingpin Sudipta Sen. "We paid thousands but saw criminals instead of Messi," one spectator fumed, demanding refunds.
Messi's early departure shattered the 'The GOAT Tour India' schedule, though he was set to proceed to Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. The airport frenzy at 2:30 AM Friday had built sky-high expectations, only for Kolkata's premier venue to crumble under poor planning. International headlines now brand the city unfit for global events, tarnishing India's football fandom image.
As cleanup crews surveyed the wreckage, questions swirl over accountability. Were ticket scalpers enabled? Why no robust security for such hype? This "Yuva Bharati scandal" underscores the perils of unchecked enthusiasm without infrastructure, leaving fans cheated and Messi's Indian sojourn scarred.
Hours after the incident, Arup Biswas, speaking to the media, said, “The government has already ordered an investigation. I will not comment while the investigation is ongoing.” After saying this, he got into his car and left.
It is worth noting that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already ordered an investigation into the entire incident. The investigation committee will be chaired by retired Justice Asim Kumar Roy. The state's Chief Secretary and the Additional Secretary of the Home and Hill Affairs Department will also be members of the committee.
